Virgin Steele – Por Victor Kataóka

Uma banda “cult”, vinda dos Estados Unidos, que se tornaria a “banda mais injustiçada da história do heavy metal”.
Tudo começou nesse auto-intitulado de 1982.
É interessante notar o quanto o Virgin Steele mudou, e evoluiu depois da sua estréia.
Ao longo do disco, nota-se o contraste entre a guitarra de Jack Starr e as melodias e traços épicos do vocalista/tecladista David DeFeis.
“Danger Zone” abre o disco com uma introdução, caracterizada por os arranjos melódicos tradicionais e bem feitos de DeFeis, que são interrompidos pelos riffs de Starr, fazendo a mesma cair em um heavy tradicional que ficou imortalizado na década de 80 por bandas como Judas Priest e Iron Maiden.
A próxima, “American Girl”, um Rock and Roll em clima alto astral, apesar do resultado não ser ruim, a partir do segundo disco, as músicas em clima festivo já não apresentam a roupagem rock and roll, e sim Hard Rock.
A mediana “Dead End Kids” é outra galgada no heavy tradicional oitentista, mas que não consegue um resultado tão satisfatório como “Danger Zone”. Descartável para o padrão de qualidade do Virgin Steele, mas regular para uma banda mediana.
O Hard Rock da banda faz sua estréia na mediana “Drive on Through”. É notável como DeFeis evoluiu com o passar dos anos, se tornando um dos melhores vocalistas da história do Heavy Metal.Nesse disco ele não apresenta uma performance que o coloca acima dos outros vocalistas da época, inclusive os seus agudos em alguns momentos soam irritantes e perdidos. Em “Drive on Through” isso é bastante acentuado. É nela que o baixo de Joe O’Reily se faz realmente presente…
A semi balada “Still In Love With You” (que no relançamento do disco ganhou uma introdução de piano chamada Lothlorien) talvez seja a única faixa com cacife suficiente para ser considerada um clássico. Belas melodias e um vocal com bastante feeling do Sr. DeFeis, acompanhado de um bonito solo mostrava que o Virgin Steele seria uma banda diferenciada.
A próxima, “Children of Storm”, apresenta um heavy tradicionalíssimo, rápido e com uma atmosfera épica, bons riffs e solo, e cozinha entrosada, um dos melhores resultados da parceria DeFeis/Starr.
O Hard Rock volta a marcar presença com outra faixa em clima rock and roll: “Pictures on You”. Os riffs de Starr incendeiam a faixa, enquanto o vocal de DeFeis não mostra tudo o que é capaz, ficando em segundo plano.
“Pulverizer” é um solo de Jack Starr, até parece que ele sabia que só iria gravar dois discos, e resolveu incluir esse solo…
“Living In Sin” é mais uma faixa de metal oitentista, mediana, o único destaque é a novamente a presença do baixo de O’Reily.
O disco é encerrado com a cadenciada Virgin Steele, fugindo um pouco do metal oitentista/hard rock, e mais próximo do que a banda viria a fazer no futuro. Joey Ayvazian faz um bom trabalho na bateria, tudo é muito bem encaixado, inclusive os vocais de DeFeis, mas falta aquele feeling fora do comum, que seria característica marcante da banda.
No relançamento de 2002, foram incluídas as versões originais de American Girl, Dead End Kids, Drive On Thru, e Living In Sin, além das demos com uma fraca produção: The Lesson e Life of Crime.
No final das contas, um bom disco, nada mais que isso, pra quem não conhece o Virgin Steele eu não recomendo, justamente por não mostrar todo o potencial da banda, ficando no mesmo nível de vários lançamentos de bandas obscuras daquela época.

A banda tem status cult, alguns consideram uma das melhores bandas americanas de heavy metal, seus álbuns sempre têm boas notas, no entanto, o Virgin Steele nunca conseguiu me envolver totalmente. Foi formada no início dos anos 80 pelo guitarrista Jack Starr, mas o vocalista David DeFeis, terceiro a entrar na banda, acabou virando o “dono” do VS. “Noble Savage” é considerado um clássico, mas, para mim, não tem nada acima da média. DeFeis tem uma boa voz quando canta de forma agressiva, no entanto, quando resolve explorar seus agudos, meu amigo, me desculpe, mas não soa nada bem, e ele ainda é tecladista, instrumento que é utilizado, ainda bem, poucas vezes no álbum, não acrescentando nada às composições, pelo contrário, tira sua potencialidade. A cozinha formada pelo baixista Joe O’Reilly e pelo baterista Joey Ayvazian, cumpre bem seu papel, mas nada que mereça destaque, e o guitarrista Edward Pursino mostra ser um bom guitarrista, mas também nada de excepcional. O álbum foi relançado em 96 pela Noise com algumas faixas extras, e, no geral, possui alguns bons momentos de metal tradicional e outros mais fracos, voltados ao hard. “Noble Savage”, em uma opinião estritamente pessoal, sem dúvida, é um bom álbum dos anos oitenta, mas nada que mereça o status de clássico.
